UK electric car sales hit record high

While electric cars may not have taken off as quickly as the likes of Renault and Nissan had hoped, the latest figures from the government’s £5,000 electric car grant scheme show that sales have leapt 25% in the last quarter. A total of 1,149 electric cars were registered in Q3, not only a 25% improvement over Q2, but the most successful quarter since the government scheme began back in January 2011, indicating that consumers are starting to understand the technology and its limitations rather better. The new Fiat 500C Convertible launches in UK showrooms today And if you want a fun, economical and stylish little convertible to zip round the city in this summer, it would be hard to find a better option than the 500C. True, its ‘cutesey’ style is not to everyone’s taste, but it’s hard to argue against the car when it costs just £11k (for the Pop version) and is quite likely to hang on to a good chunk of its value for the next year or two. But retro-looking as it may be, the 500C is very much a modern car.

Redesigned Ford Focus expected to get 40 mpg highway

The redesigned 2012 Ford Focus will get an estimated 40 mpg in highway driving with an all-aluminum 2.0-liter engine mated to a six-speed, dual dry-clutch automatic transmission. The normally aspirated engine combines variable camshaft timing and high-pressure direct fuel injection to crank out 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque. That compares with 140 hp and 136 lb-ft from the aluminum 2.0-liter engine used in the current-generation Focus.
