Very unique aircraft turbocharger up for sale.  This is a high pressure ratio turbocharger developed by Teledyne Continental in 1986 and reported out in SAE Paper 871041.  What's really unique about this turbo is that it can provide a pressure ratio 5.7 for a large block engine to achieve altitude compensation for full power at altitudes greater than 30,000.  This is a very lightweight turbocharger (28.3 lbm for the full unit).  Read the attached paper to fully understand it's capabilities (I can email you a pdf if you have trouble reading the jpg's).  A few key features...

Developed for the Voyager 550 liquid cooled line of motors to provide 300 bhp at 30,000 ft
Applied to the Boeing Condor high altitude aircraft which flew in 1988 to above 67,000 ft altitude
Scale design of the TP500 turboprop engine compressor
Titanium radial design compressor
Rolling element bearing system with C355 aluminum housing with insulated heat shield
M50 ABEC 7 angular contact ball bearings
Corrected mass flow of 85.8 lbm/min
Corrected speed of 85,890
Adiabatic efficiency 78%

This is a new unit, with only 25 units ever fabricated.  Very unique functional and historical turbocharger that is ripe for all sorts of other uses, such as altitude and speed records.

Cuba removes new car purchase restrictions

Fri, 20 Dec 2013

Granma, the Communist Party’s newspaper of record in Cuba, said Wednesday that the Council of Ministers approved regulations that “eliminate existing mechanisms of approval for the purchase of motor vehicles from the state.” That means the sale of new and used cars will be allowed to the public. Up until now, Cubans could buy and sell vehicles to each other, but they had to request permission from the government to purchase a new vehicle -- the main reason for the island's unique automotive landscape. The new laws will be enacted gradually, according to Granma, with a set minimum price.

Learners' bizarre superstitions revealed

Mon, 07 Jul 2014

NERVES can have a crippling effect on learner drivers once they get to test day. Here, instructors with the AA Driving School recall particularly superstitious students whose desire to get their full licence resulted in carrying out unusual rituals: :: One pupil wore the T-shirt she had on when she gave birth to her daughter (now seven years old) and the trousers she was wearing before she conceived. :: A learner had failed three times due to nerves.
